IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

TES ceased operation the end of 2014. There were not enough membership renewals to justify continued publication of TUGBITTS. This website is being left "up" to document the existence of the society. It is now maintained and operated by the Maine Coastal News.

CHARLES B. SCHNEIDER, JR.

October 16, 2012

Our friend Charlie Schneider passed away Tuesday, October 16, 2012 in Morton Hospital in Taunton, Mass. Charlie, a dedicated railroad and tugboat enthusiast, made a tremendous effort to save the New York Central #16 tugboat when CVS pharmacy purchased the site where it was located in Bourne, Massachusetts several years ago. See a separate article about Charlie's involvement with this vessel on the TES website at the link below. Charlie had contacted the City of Bayonne, New Jersey and was nearly successful at completing arrangements to have the tug moved to a harborfront park when CVS allowed others to go and start cutting pieces off the tugboat in Bourne. We all know Charlie was very disappointed by the outcome and the eventual scrapping of most of the remains of the vessel. He did a tremendous job of trying to set up the saving of the tug and we will all remember him for his dedication and efforts.

TES GATHERINGS

There were no TES Gatherings in 2011 and 2012, in part due to reduced level of activity and high cost of travel in the current economy. We will keep you posted regarding event planning forthe future. Due to the considerable amount of planning and work these events require we anticipate that they will not be held annually. Considering the reports that the economy seems to be in decline again, there is the possibility that there will not be another Gathering for a while.

THE WORKBOAT SHOW

The workboat show was held in New Orleans in December, and we have some interesting news from there. We were informed that they no longer allow you to take any pictures of the exhibits, including your own! If you want any photos you have to buy the ones offered by their "official" photographer. This came to us as information pertaining to the display of cutaway engines at the show. So if you are planning on attending next year and want to have any photos to remember the trip, you might want to check the rules first before you make plans to attend.

PHOTOS AND THE INTERNET

It recently came to our attention that Google Images has been "indexing" images from our website and has displayed them on their website with only the disclaimer that "images may be copyrighted". The way they present them does not preserve individual page copyright notices or photographer credit lines. We ask our many members who have generously contributed photos to understand that this is done without our permission and is beyond our control. The only defense against this type of situation is to imprint a copyright notice directly on the image in a location where it cannot be easily edited out. We are starting to do that with some new image postings, but it is useless to do it for images that have already been indexed.

WRITE FOR TUGBITTS

We hope you enjoy this website, but if you are thinking of submitting an article or story for the website, please consider instead writing it for TUGBITTS. Websites are fun but they are just a bunch of electrons, their existence is temporary, and their contents are too easily pirated by others. Good writing and good information deserve printed publication!
